Cabin-Warming

There's a small cabin a little ways up the mountain behind Milliways. It's cozy-looking and inviting, smoke streaming softly from the chimney. It's well-lit and welcoming on a cold, snowy night.

Lorne comes out of the cabin holding a mug of hot chocolate. He smiles when he sees Teja standing by the hot tub.

"Teja!"

Teja turns, and looks at him. "Greetings, Major Lorne! You made a good place for yourselves here. It will be truly relaxing to have a hot bath in here, and look out at all the snow, when no other men are about!"

"We're happy with it," Lorne says, looking back at the cabin with a satisfied smile.

"And I'm sure we'll make good use of the hot tub."

"I would not doubt it -- I would do so as well, had I such a place," Teja says. "I take great delight in hot baths."

Lorne laughs. "I think most people do. It's a good way to relax."

"I think to some, it merely means the annoying need for cleanliness," Teja says. "They would rather get drunk then have a bath."

From his tone of voice, he thinks such people true barbarians.

"If you want to get clean," Lorne says with the air of someone imparting a personal philosophy, "take a shower. Baths are for much more pleasant activities."

"And confusing cats," Teja says. "Indeed."

"Confusing cats?" Lorne asks.

"They sit by my bath and worry deeply why their human is attempting to drown himself," Teja says.

Lorne chuckles. "I take it they don't try to join you."

Teja gives a brief, barking laugh at that. "Oh no -- they sit, and stare!" he says.

Lorne nods. "I've never had a cat, but I can imagine they'd be worried by all that water."

"They are," Teja says. "It is amusing to see!"

That seems to be the chief point of having a cat," Lorne says. "Amusement."

"And mice-catching, and warm, living fur on one's cold feet," Teja says.

"Well, I have Jack for that," Lorne says, smiling. "The feet-warming, I mean. Not the mice-catching."

Teja gives another brief bark at that. "Well, he is a resourceful man," he says. "He might build good mouse-traps."

Pause, while he ponders.

"I wonder what it would be like, to have a lover with me, always," he then ads, more quietly.

"Then you have to put up with all their little quirks all the time," Lorne says, trying to make light of the situation.

Truthfully, he's been happier since being stuck in Milliways than he has in a very long time.

"An they would have to put up with mine," Teja says, "and wake in the night to find me drawing thing I would make in the forge, and be eyed by cats in odd private moments."

He is trying to make light of it, also.

"Maybe it is best the way it is, with my lovers only coming here very rarely. Their doors are stingy."

Lorne nods. "Living with someone else is never easy. No matter how much you love them."

Jack is easier to live with than some other roommates Lorne's had, but it's still never perfect.

"It was not much doubted, in my time," Teja says. "Men and women married, as a matter of course. It was only me who preferred to be alone."
