Cooking dinner for Jack

It's a lovely evening, and Lorne is tempted to stop by the lake for a quick dip on the way, but he's carrying raw meat with him, which makes it seem like a bad idea. The walk itself is nearly as nice anyway, and Lorne smiles as the cabin comes into view.

It feels like coming home on leave, which he supposes it sort of is, except that he didn't have to apply for it, and it won't come out of his bank.

"You know what we should get, babe? A grill," he says as they come up the stairs to the porch.

"It'll be as close as we can reasonably get," Lorne says, shrugging. "And we can plant our own potatoes, and...well, the pie crust we probably won't be able to make with our own ingredients either."

"Potatoes won't be ready by November, planting this late," Jack muses. "Nor wheat for pie crust and stuffing. Oh, Evan, sage stuffing in turkey, doesn't that sound good?"

Lorne chuckles. "Sounds delicious, babe."

"It's very good," Jack assures him.

"We can add that to the list, then."

"Herb garden," Jack says cheerfully.

Lorne grins. "Getting closer and closer to that white picket fence all the time."

"If I'm going to be here a while I may as well make it beautiful."

"I like it," Lorne says. "It's starting to feel...permanent."

"Our homestead," Jack says quietly.

"Yeah," Lorne murmurs, reaching across to grasp Jack's hand.

Jack smiles and holds his hand tight.

"You ready for dessert?" Lorne murmurs, squeezing his hand.

"You made dessert?"

Lorne shrugs. "I asked Bar for a couple things. Nothing fancy."

"Hell yes, I'm ready." He wipes his mouth and crosses his knife and fork on his plate.

Lorne laughs and stands, picking up his plate and Jack's. "It's really nothing fancy," he says. "Don't get all excited."

"I'm just looking forward to a treat."

"Well, it should taste good if nothing else." He sets the plates in the sink and rinses them quickly, then pulls two peaches out of the bag from Bar and starts slicing them.

Jack leans back and sips his beer, watching Lorne.

Lorne smiles as he works and gets two small bowls out, dividing the sliced peaches between them. "My grandma used to serve this when she forgot to make something for dessert."

"Looks good so far."

Lorne rummages in the ice box for some cream, chuckling, and pours a little over the peaches and brings both bowls over to the table.

"Ta da!" He sets Jack's bowl in front of him. "Told you it wasn't fancy."

"It's perfect," Jack says and tilts his head up to kiss him lightly.

Lorne cups his cheek as he kisses him and sits down with a smile. "Quick and easy."
