Cooking dinner for Jack

It's a lovely evening, and Lorne is tempted to stop by the lake for a quick dip on the way, but he's carrying raw meat with him, which makes it seem like a bad idea. The walk itself is nearly as nice anyway, and Lorne smiles as the cabin comes into view.

It feels like coming home on leave, which he supposes it sort of is, except that he didn't have to apply for it, and it won't come out of his bank.

"You know what we should get, babe? A grill," he says as they come up the stairs to the porch.

"I'm just looking forward to a treat."

"Well, it should taste good if nothing else." He sets the plates in the sink and rinses them quickly, then pulls two peaches out of the bag from Bar and starts slicing them.

Jack leans back and sips his beer, watching Lorne.

Lorne smiles as he works and gets two small bowls out, dividing the sliced peaches between them. "My grandma used to serve this when she forgot to make something for dessert."

"Looks good so far."

Lorne rummages in the ice box for some cream, chuckling, and pours a little over the peaches and brings both bowls over to the table.

"Ta da!" He sets Jack's bowl in front of him. "Told you it wasn't fancy."

"It's perfect," Jack says and tilts his head up to kiss him lightly.

Lorne cups his cheek as he kisses him and sits down with a smile. "Quick and easy."

Jack cuts off a bit of peach with the spoon and swirls it through the cream before eating it. "Like I said. Perfect."

Lorne smiles and has a bite himself. "Mmm...haven't had peaches like this in...a very, very long time."

"I think we should do it more often. Simple is good."

"Simple is good," Lorne says. "Got too many complications everywhere else."

"I love it when you come home to be simple with me, sweetheart."

Lorne smiles and reaches across to wipe a bit of cream from the corner of Jack's lips. "You do simple very well, darlin'."

Jack chuckles and licks his lip.

Lorne's eyes track Jack's tongue. "It's good to be home," he says softly.

Jack gazes at him and starts to smile.

Lorne ducks his head. "What?"

"It just hit me again," Jack says softly. "Why I fell for you."

"Oh?"

Oh look, confused/flattered/pleased again.

"Just . . . you. All the . . . you of you."

Lorne smiles and swirls his last bit of peach around in his bowl before eating it. "C'mon," he says quietly. "Let's clean up and go upstairs."

Jack gets to his feet at once and gathers dishes to put them by the sink. He starts pumping water to fill it.

Lorne starts putting away the salt and vinegar and various other bits and pieces.

"I bet I can get seeds and cuttings from the bar," Jack says as he washes the dishes.
