Cooking dinner for Jack

It's a lovely evening, and Lorne is tempted to stop by the lake for a quick dip on the way, but he's carrying raw meat with him, which makes it seem like a bad idea. The walk itself is nearly as nice anyway, and Lorne smiles as the cabin comes into view.

It feels like coming home on leave, which he supposes it sort of is, except that he didn't have to apply for it, and it won't come out of his bank.

"You know what we should get, babe? A grill," he says as they come up the stairs to the porch.

Lorne chuckles. "Really? Do you never read novels?"

"Sometimes I do! But I like history better. My degree's in it, remember?"

"I know," Lorne says. "But I don't just read books about rocks and engineering."

He smiles. "It's cute, though. You're kind of a nerd."

"A what?" Jack says, laughing a little.

"A nerd," Lorne says, smiling. "You like books and school and...you're...smart and shit."

"Okay," Jack says and stirs the potatoes.

"This is one of those 'the future is weird' things, babe."

"Yes, it is," Jack says, shaking his head.

"Just keep remind yourself how much you love me," Lorne suggests.

"Oh, honey, I never forget that," Jack sways, smirking.

Lorne chuckles. "Even when I'm all weird and...futurey?"

"i love when you're futurey. I love when you confuse me."

"Aww...baby." Jack gets a kiss for that. "I love when you're old-fashioned too."

"Thanks, sweetheart," Jack says and squeezes his hand.

Lorne squeezes back and returns to the stove. "Steaks are just about ready. How're the fries coming?"

"Nearly there." He gets a plate to drain the fries on.

Lorne nods and gets out two plates, dishing up the tomatoes and steaks.

Jack fishes the fries out of the oil with a pair of cooking tongs and stacks them on the plate, and brings them to the table.

Lorne carries the plates and his beer to the table. "Anything else?"

"I don't think so. Unless you want some vinegar and salt for the fries?"

"Salt, at least," Lorne says, going back for some. "You want vinegar?"

"Yes, please. It's delicious with vinegar." He sits and spreads a napkin over his lap. This stuff gets messy.

Lorne smiles as he sets the salt and vinegar on the table. "You spent way too much time in Britain, baby."

Jack snorts as he shakes on the vinegar. "It's better than mayonnaise, like the Dutch."
