Cooking dinner for Jack

It's a lovely evening, and Lorne is tempted to stop by the lake for a quick dip on the way, but he's carrying raw meat with him, which makes it seem like a bad idea. The walk itself is nearly as nice anyway, and Lorne smiles as the cabin comes into view.

It feels like coming home on leave, which he supposes it sort of is, except that he didn't have to apply for it, and it won't come out of his bank.

"You know what we should get, babe? A grill," he says as they come up the stairs to the porch.

Jack gets two bottles from their ice box, twists them open and hands one to Lorne.

"I love you," he says quietly. "I'm never unhappy when you're here."

"I know," Lorne whispers, offering Jack a weak smile. "But I can't be here all the time."

Jack caresses Lorne's cheek. "It's okay, sweetheart. I'm okay. I really am.

"And we've got to stop having this conversation," he says, going back to the potatoes. "It's not going to lead us anywhere new."

"Yeah, I know," Lorne says. "It just keeps coming up."

He pulls the tomatoes out of the bag and washes them in the sink.

Jack drops the sliced potatoes into a bowl of water and starts hunting for a kettle.

"Just stop worrying about me."

"It's not that easy, babe," Lorne says, finding a pan for the tomatoes.

"You could practice. Stop worrying about me for five minutes every day, then six, then seven . . ."

Lorne smiles softly. "I could try that. I think I could manage five minutes a day."

"Good," Jack says, and Lorne gets another kiss.

Lorne smiles into the kiss before pulling away to put the tomatoes in the pan with some oil and herbs.

"Was this everything you wanted? Steak and fries and tomatoes?"

"Yup. Everything." He pours some oil into the kettle and puts it on the hook that hangs over the fireplace.

Some things he's just more comfortable doing his way.

Lorne covers the tomatoes and sets them on the stove, turning the steaks again.

"Any thoughts on what to do after dinner?"

"I could read to you," Jack says, smirking a bit.

Lorne smirks back. "You could, yeah. What are you reading these days?"

"A biography of Theodore Roosevelt."

Lorne chuckles. "Really? Do you never read novels?"

"Sometimes I do! But I like history better. My degree's in it, remember?"

"I know," Lorne says. "But I don't just read books about rocks and engineering."

He smiles. "It's cute, though. You're kind of a nerd."

"A what?" Jack says, laughing a little.

"A nerd," Lorne says, smiling. "You like books and school and...you're...smart and shit."

"Okay," Jack says and stirs the potatoes.

"This is one of those 'the future is weird' things, babe."

"Yes, it is," Jack says, shaking his head.

"Just keep remind yourself how much you love me," Lorne suggests.
